WHY DO FINNISH PEOPLE LOVE MUSIC

HIM, 69 Eyes, Apocalyptica,Lordi, Negative, Nelja Ruusua, Popeda, Agents, Leningrado Cowboys, Iconcrash…but also Sibelius, Tango, music manifestations in Suomenlinna and Haamelinna, ballet and opera, important music festivals of rock like Provinssirock or the upcoming more and more famous Helldone Festival on the New Years’Eve in Helsinki: the finnish musical outline is very rich and has various genders and aspects.
How is it possible, that a country considered just a group of lakes and forests until 30 years ago, which economy depended exclusively on these resources, has suddenly become the propeller center of the international music outline of the last ten years?
The truth is that nothing was more false and stereotyped than this image we inhabitants of the southern part of Europe had – and in some cases still have – of Finland; the music tradition, although pretty recent in historic sense, is very well developed in the cultural heritage owned by the inhabitants of this nation, since 1914, the year in which the first symphonic orchestra has been founded. The figure of J.Sibelius (1865 – 1957), great composer who put in music the poem “Finlandia” and many others symphonies, gave a particular mark to the musical spirit of finnish people who already considered playing the kantele (the traditional stringed instrument from Carelia) and gathering around the fire to sing old songs an important moment of social union.
We can’t even forget the great tradition of the finnish tango, which is collecting many recognitions at an international level as well as the argentine one. To this dance Aki Kaurismaki dedicated his movie “Laitakaupungin Valot” (The Evening Lights), 2006.
The finnish schools are those in which the subject “music” is present at every level of education, from the kindergarten to the university. And that’s not the end: the idea of a children education devoted to improve the ability of listening and producing music is present into the basic principles of the family and it’s carried on through instruments like sound tales, psychomotor plays of melodic or rhythmic imitations. In the home of almost every finnish child there are toy-music instruments: guitars, drums, keyboards…everything without any ambition to make the child become a real musician in the future.
What is worth of, is to develop imagination ,creativity and the communication and relation abilities. The talented ones have in this way the possibility to develop their gift; for the others there is the capability to listen and to benefit from a spiritual treasure of matchless value, besides the pleasure coming from music.
So what’s the musical outline present into the Country?
A very appreciated current is the one of singers and groups who sing in finnish: Egotrippi, Eppu Normaali, Popeda, Disco and many others who are not very famous abroad (because of the difficult language they use), but very supported in their homeland, where they are considered as saviours of their traditions and sense of national union.
Nearby these ones, we find the international rockbands: HIM, 69 Eyes, The Rasmus, Hanoi Rocks, Nightwish. They sing in English, but even in these cases their rock has peculiar sounds and themes: to very relaxing tones they alternate hard and rough sounds, obtained through the guitar riffs and distortions added to the melodic parts of the keyboards.; drums and bass usually guide the rhythm of the songs. The final effect is melodic and involving: if we add to this the lyrics, which often follow the melancholy of the Nordic sensitiveness, the result is really unique and it’s easy to understand how HIM, 69 Eyes and others can trust in fans very faithful and passionately fond of them.
