HELSINKI: DISCOVERING THE HIM’S PLACES

It’s about 18.00 of a summer afternoon and the sun is still high in the sky. Seagulls are flying above the Kauppatori Square from where the last stalls with their unmistakable orange tents are clearing. In a few time, the square and the monument dedicated to the zar Nicholas II and his queen Alexandra, The Queen’s Stone, will loose the crowd of tourists that everyday make the surroundings animated. Two boys run and go to seat by the pier where are placed the boats that everyday live to Suomenlinna; their names are Ville and Mikko and they have both a “damned” passion for music. They remain there for long, staring at the sea and talking about Black Sabath,Kiss, chords, they also sing someone of their favourite songs…

This is just a dream, coming from my fantasy; but every time I went to Helsinki I imagined to see them, to meet those boys. And every time I walk along some roads of the city I can’t avoid to think that my steps are repeating theirs: Ville, Migй, Linde, Burton and Gas… This city enters my soul more and more every time I go along its streets: it’s the city that saw them growing up, not only in the personal way, but above all in the artistic and musical one. I close my eyes and my memories bring me first of al in front of the Lelukauppa, the sexy shop in Kallio, where a young Ville, under his dad Kari’s guidance, worked as a shop boy, maybe already thinking about lyrics, sounds, notes took quickly on a notebook, with his angular way of writing. Maybe he wanted to meet Linde, to drink a beer and to have some rehearsal into Migй’s cellar. Following my fancies, I arrive to Kaivopuisto Park, where maybe the guys had often run by bicycle or played soccer; I can see scenes from the first “Wicked game” video, realized in a very simple way by Antto Melasniemi, with Ville walking around among the trees with his dog. A little further, here’s the bungee jumping crane, that remembers to me Lily’s adventures during the shooting of the one Daniel Lioneye’s video “Never been in Love”. Going on we arrive to the pier…there are the guys again in a picture shot about ten years ago, under a heavy snowfall, with the wind blowing hard. And again there are the meeting places where it was possible to play; first of all the Tavastia Klubi, also defined the HIM temple; the entrance, with the boards that keep the names of the bands playing, collects a lot of heartagrams and evidences of love for HIM. The inner part is truly related to HIM, starting from the stage where I can see them once again remembering the amazing performance on New Year’s Eve, and then the bar and the backstage that have been represented in so many pics. Then we have the Cantina West, the most famous tex-mex restaurant in Helsinki. It gives me a strong emotion when I see the chairs with their heartshaped back, of which I can remember an image where the lads are seated near the counter and I smile remembering the episode of “Synnin Viemaa” in which Ville tells about the try of stealing those chairs…
Going on I arrive to the Corona bar, in Eerinkatu, where I never met HIM, but the Kaurismaki brothers, the owners of the place. I think they like HIM too, because Aki put on “Vampire Heart” the night I was there, making my heart beat hard; then we have the Inferno, at the corner between Uudemankatu and Annankatu; going along the last one we find the “Lost and Found”: and here I stop thinking about Ville seated at his table with Antto Melasniemi and other friends; just water for him, after having brought some beer for his friends…and his eyes meet mine for a while once again, like two evenings before, when at Tavastia those incredible green eyes looked at me and he smiled while I was talking about our Street Team…unforgettable moments, that make me love Helsinki deeper and deeper.
