SWALLOW THE SUN

And here I am telling about the concert of Swallow The Sun, the 29th Dec at the Helldone club. Is not so much time that I listen to this group: is about 2 months; I had the chance to know them better because they did a whole tour together with Amorphis. They are Finland too, from Jyväskylä and they play doom/death metal music. I was curious to see them live and as a matter of fact that evening I was waiting only that they take the stage for playing, unfortunately I don’t know all their songs, but I remember that they did Hope that is also the title of their new album, Out of this gloomy light, Discending Winters, Do not fall Asleep. They played very well, and Mikko too, with his vocal lines first clean and right later with a large growl, sang really well! I liked them so much that the hour that I spent seemed to be less that the other groups. Well...what can I say more? I hope to be able one day to see them again because I think they deserve a lot.

THE SKREPPERS

A band that tell they are singular is precious little, which one that opened the end of the years HIM’s concert at Tavastia. The Skreppers, they are Finnish too, native from Kerava and working since the '90s. They call themselves the Trash-Rock Kings of Finland, and propose a particular kind of music: Garage / Psychobilly / Punk.


As I have to say the truth, I had never heard ‘em before, despite their kind of music is not among my favorites, I tried to follow their performance with approximately care. Particular even in the look, as well as in set design of their stage. Three members of the group were dressed in an elegant white complete while the other two was most sporty and in black. Leaded by Special K, a strange character who was wearing shoes with white heels as the rest, in my personal opinion are much smoke and no roast. I don’t want fans go angry, but I am of the opinion that when you try to appear so exaggerated way in front, behind there is not so much. We have to admit that some songs were really funny, perhaps follow them in another context would be much better and easier to pay more attention to their work. The band has also collaborated with HIM frontman in two songs: Hedonis Hellcats (2002) and The Call of The Trash (2004) and took part in 2001, in the project of "Daniel Lioneye and The Rollers" with Linde, Ville and Migè; the singer, Hiili Hiilesmaa, was the producer of Greatest Lovesongs Vol.666 and Love Metal, as well as co-producer, along with Tim Palmer, of Venus Doom.

PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

The musical start with a black and white scene, where people from the high-class of an ancient London tries to get precious rarities from the old Opera Populaire in Paris, destroyed by a mysterious fire. There’s no music in this first scene, such like in others black and white scenes which appear in some parts of the movie. The moment when the music can finally be played comes when the time of the story is set in the past, in those years when the Opera Populaire was still famous and working. From this point of the musical, the movie can be separated in two parts: • The first one, where main characters are presented and the “good” face of the Phantom is revealed. • The second one, where the “evil” face of Phantom commits murders and bring confusion in the Opera. Music is used to divide the movie and to give different personalities to the main characters. So is by music that people can be part of the plot, imagine every character feeling, from the love/obsession of the Phantom for Christine, to her admiration of him and her shock knowing that he is a real, deformed person and not a “angel “, to the childish but true love of Raul in the first part. During this first period of the musical the music is soft, passionate but sweet in some ways and all best feelings of every character are showed; lyrics are inspired and romantic too, in particular in songs like “ Music of the night” and “ All I ask of you”, while in the main theme “Angel of music” is the genial and kind side of the Phantom to be described in front of the amazed sight of Christine.
In the second part feelings are not so soft like in the first one: music is more strong, more violent and passionate and all the anger of the Phantom is felt in every word and in every lyrics. His anger against a world which has always rejected him in the past and banned him from the society in uncontrollable when he realize that his “angel” can’t accept his deformation and his mischievous past; his revenge is not only against Raul, who stole his love, but is also against every human, every kind gesture or kind though which everyone has always denied to him. Phantom anger is easily felt in lyrics like the “ All I ask of you reprise”, when he promise to the world that he will have his revenge and all the final part from the “Don Juan Thriumpant” play to the kiss shared with Christine, the only kind gesture that humans have ever gave him. After this moment Phantom character change again: he realize his sins, he feel bad and guilty for his actions and his never-ended love for Christine win his evil feelings. At this point is Raul’s desperation and theatre’s workers anger to be described by the music, ending with the complete redemption of the Phantom, and his refuse to continue to write music without his muse. In my opinion the music achieve its goals, and put in evidence feelings and important changes in characters personality and in the story, and it’s surely the most efficient way to wake up people’s feelings because characters themselves are singing their own emotions and their intentions for the future. Useful is also the use of a stronger and “heavier” music for the main am most important scenes in the movie, like the meeting between Christine and the Phantom, the Phantom desire of revenge and the revelation of Phantom’s deformation. For me Phantom of the opera’s music is a pleasant and beautiful revelation: during the movie the beautiful Andrew Lloyd Webber musical creation made me feel amazed in front of the genial and mysterious figure of the Phantom in the beginning, and captured during the “Don Juan Thriumpant” play. The scene where Christine pray in front of her father’s grave is moving, and the interpretation in the end of the track amazing. But feelings that I have felt the most during the show are pity and sadness for the Phantom condition and his desire of revenge against a world which wouldn’t have nothing more than hate from a rejected man. The sum of all this sad, deluding and hopeless feelings is in the most memorable scene of the movie, when the Phantom finally has his redemption in his house on the lake in secret passages of the Opera, after Christine and Raul go away leaving him alone; the lyrics of his desperate scream are the highest expression of his miserable condition:

“ You alone can make my song take flight. It’s over now the music of the night. ”
