WORLD OF MISTERY

THE CRYSTAL SKULLS

Crystal, until the ancient times, has always been associated with great spiritual powers. Ancient Greeks called it Crystallos, or “light ice”. In Egypt deads’ foreheads were adorned with the so called “third eye”, an object created by crystal quartz that allowed the dead, as they believed, to see the road to eternity. In the modern culture crystal is used by the fortune teller to get the famous spheres where they read the future. The most extraordinary object man encountered on his path is surely the crystal skull, found by Mitchell-Hedges in 1927 during his explorations in Belize, in the ancient Maya city of Labaanatum, the city of the fallen rocks. Some sources state that Anna, his adoptive daughter really found it, after years of archaeological excavations in the zone. The mystery grew deep with the found of the lower part of the skull that added to the upper one allowed the articulation of the jaw with the rest of the skull, creating then the suggestive effect of a human skull that opens and closes the mouth. Studies state that probably this skull was manipulated this way by the priests who used it as ad adoration and divination object. It is told that the frontal lobe of the skull sometimes gets cloudy, becoming milky; other times it seems to diffuse a particular spectral aura like the halo of the moon. The legend tells that everyone who have had a long contact with the skull had thrilling sensorial experiences and assumed the ability to hear ethereal sounds and smells, and to see the appearance of ghosts. But the legend doesn’t stop here: it is told that there are several other crystal skulls in the world, 13 in the whole, distributed in remote and unknown zones of the planet and that, once reunited , they will reveal secrets and knowledge to mankind far beyond our actual comprehension. Its dating it’s uncertain as it’s unknown its real provenience: someone says it’s Maya, Aztec or coming from Atlantis in the last chance. From the first studies scientists thought that the work to obtain this object lasted over 300 years but, recently, some studies brought to light another assumption, that the skull is not that ancient as it is thought but it’s a fake, this means an object wisely handmade by a 19 century craftsman. Whether it’s true or not, the fact is that the crystal skull is one of the more suggestive artefacts we could stay in front of during our life. We’d expect to see in one of the most elegant halls of the British Museum, with all the advertising it had made by the good old Indiana Jones, instead it is put into a little corner, nearly hidden from visitor’s sight, alienated from the lights of the stage as it is a too much uncomfortable object to show it in the clear light. The visual impact is high: it is perfect in its made, so much to be easily exchanged for a human skull. The light of the lamp that filters inside of it gives it the colours of a rainbow, making it even more hypnotizing . Because this is the sensation we feel in front of the crystal skull: you are kidnapped by this object in front of such a perfection and perhaps unaware to be in front of one of the biggest mysteries of all the mankind, mystery that, for now, has no intention to be revealed.
