TAUBERTAL FESTIVAL
In May 2003, finnish band HIM appeared on Taubertal Open Air festival in Rothenburg , Germany. Almost two months after the release of their self-categorizing fourth album Love Metal, HIM perform for almost 40 mins, old and new songs in front of a very live and warm crowd.
The performance starts with Poison Girl from Razorblade Romance. The band is clearly in a good mood. Dressed in black and with no microphone stand in front of him, singer Ville Valo sings..”I did it all just for her..” Linde’s playing stands out even at this early in the band’s appearance. Nine songs are performed that night in Germany. The microphone stand appears and among fumes and a big golden heartagram on the black background, the first few notes of HIM’s cover of Chris Isaack’s “Wicked Game” are heard.All sweaty and with the constant companion, a smoke in his hand, it’s Beyond Redemption’s turn, the first track of the new album to be heard.With arms wide open the audience keeps on begging for more. “Ah it seems that there are loads of people who are Beyond Redemption,that’s what we are here for, to liberate you from the shackles of modern Christianity, excellent” the singer responds to the screams and loud applause at the end of the song. ”Pretending” from their third album Deep shadows and Brilliant highlights follows and “Lose you tonight” after it, from the same album. Ville’s cute laugh and another track from the new album is to be heard, the heartbreaking ballad “This fortress of tears”. The sound is great and Burton’s magic playing adds to the atmosphere. The decorated mic is stuck to the frontman’s hands, who gives an outstanding performance. As the band’s performance is towards the end, the next song on the setlist is “Right here in my arms”. As HIM’s performance is reaching its pick , the crowd is dancing and singing along under the singer’s call “Ladies first..you gentlemen” A nice little interaction between Ville and Mige when Mige sings “ She’ll be right here in my arms so in love…” and he is interrupted by a giggling Valo who grabs his microphone back commenting on the bassist’s performance “You don’t even know the words” .The crowd bursts into laughter.The anthem and first single off of Love Metal “Funeral of Hearts” is playing now. From the loud cheer and screams the audience turns to silence as the singer’s heavenly voice unfolds. Join me in death is the last song HIM performed. The single that made the band famous all over Europe cannot be missing.
The extraordinary performance by Gas, Linde, Mige, Burton and Ville came to its end 41 minutes after the band members came on stage. Those who had the chance to be standing in the crowd that night in Germany have some fond memories to share, of one of HIM’s best performances.Jen_Sweetheart
